There's no denying that Jess Hart is a fiercely devoted beauty boss. The Australian businesswoman and model has been heavily involved in every aspect of her brand, LUMA, from day dot, and boy can you tell. For my part, in every interview I've ever conducted with Jess, I've sensed a real responsibility to customers and genuine pride over positive feedback. That's not a given. For every Jess Hart out there, there's a brand face or even owner who isn't really au fait with ingredients, or doesn't know the shade names. I don't say that to take aim at others, just to emphasise how passionate Jess is about LUMA.
To celebrate a very exciting time in the brand's history ("We have a whole new range coming out—it's still being developed, so stay tuned," says Jess), we reached out to quiz the entrepreneur on everything from where she gets her inspiration (spoiler: She loves French pharmacies and Korean skincare trendss just as much as we do), to the product she's most proud of.
Byrdie Australia: How and where do you find inspiration for new LUMA products?
Jessica Hart: I find a lot of inspiration through my travels, for instance, I love to visit the little French pharmacies when I'm in Paris. I also listen to our customers and what they are looking for in a product. That really helps when it comes to development time.
B: Do you look at certain countries in particular for new innovations for your brand?
JH: I love what a lot of the Korean brands are doing.
They are extremely innovative and are paving the way in cosmetics and skincare.
B: What’s your favourite part about creating new products?
JH: Everything from start to finish, really. From refining textures, sourcing active ingredients, and settling on fragrance, so much goes into creating products.
B: How long do you generally test each prototype before you know if you like it or not?
JH: It can take months. I'm really particular and always have a certain vision,
so if the product doesn't meet my standards, we start from scratch again.
B: How does LUMA respond to beauty trends?
JH: We definitely take notice of trends but we don't necessarily follow them. We're all about creating the essentials, and simplifying your beauty routine.
B: What product are you most proud of so far and why?
JH: Definitely the Illuminating Highlighter ($25). We put so much hard work into the product and I feel like we have perfected it! It has been such a hit with both our customers and makeup artists.
